06 — Day Trips That Earn Their Time

The plan keeps one full day trip, Kamakura/Enoshima, plus one Tokyo neighborhood day built around Todoroki Ravine, Setagaya parks and the Shimokitazawa Curry Festival. Hakone and a dedicated Fuji day are not stacked into this trip; they would displace higher-priority family experiences.

Oct 7 — Kamakura + Enoshima

Family theme: giant Buddha, Slam Dunk coast, small trains, island views and caves. Route: Tokyo → Kamakura → Hase → Kamakurakōkōmae → Enoshima → Fujisawa → Tokyo

Morning

1. Travel to Kamakura.
2. Continue quickly to Hase.
3. Kotoku-in Great Buddha: 30–40 minutes.
4. Hasedera: prioritize the cave, garden and view; about one hour.

The day does not include a full shrine circuit. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is removed to prevent temple fatigue.

Afternoon

1. Ride the Enoden along the coast.
2. Make a brief, respectful stop at Kamakurakōkōmae for the Slam Dunk crossing view.
3. Do not stand in the road, block residents or chase a perfect train photo.
4. Continue to Enoshima for snacks, views and the Iwaya caves if weather and operations allow.
5. Use the escalator when it protects family energy.

Return

Exit through Fujisawa instead of retracing the entire Enoden route.

Cut order

1. deepest island climb;
2. Sea Candle;
3. Hasedera extras.

Keep the Great Buddha, coastal train and one enjoyable Enoshima block.

Oct 9 — Todoroki, Totoro and Curry Festival

Family theme: forest and water, a cute picnic, then a real neighborhood food festival. Route: Tokyo → Todoroki → Setagaya-Daita → Hanegi Park → Shimokitazawa → Tokyo

Morning · 08:00–10:45

1. Leave the booked Tabata base around 08:00 and change at Oimachi for the Tokyu Oimachi Line.
2. From Todoroki Station, walk about three minutes to the Golf Bridge entrance.
3. Follow the reopened riverside path to Todoroki Fudoson and the Japanese Garden.
4. Allow 60–90 minutes rather than treating the ravine as a hike.
5. Share tea and kuzu-mochi at Setsugekka if it is open.

The full riverside path reopened on March 24, 2026. It is free and has no fixed opening slot, but parts are narrow, uneven and unfenced, there is no night lighting, and the river can rise quickly in heavy rain. Official Setagaya status and safety notice

Recheck that page one to two weeks before the visit for temporary maintenance or construction restrictions.

Midday · 10:45–13:30

• Continue through Jiyūgaoka and Shibuya to Shimokitazawa/Setagaya-Daita.
• Collect a reserved box from Shiro-Hige’s Cream Puff Factory; the Daita shop is open 10:30–18:00. Official shop
• Walk to Hanegi Park for a short Totoro picnic and rest.
• Do not promise a specific Hanegi lawn or play facility: renovation work is scheduled during 2026. Use the open rest area that works on the day. Official park

Afternoon and evening · 13:30–19:00

• Walk into Shimokitazawa after lunch, when the neighborhood is fully awake.
• Oct 9 is day two of the 2026 Shimokitazawa Curry Festival, confirmed for Oct 8–25.
• Use the final official map to choose three contrasting mini portions and share them as a family.
• Between portions, each child chooses one stop: vintage, music/books, Mikan or Reload.
• Add a normal ramen dinner only if the curry portions were genuinely small and everyone is still hungry.

Cut and weather rules

• Cut first: Hanegi Park, then extra vintage shopping, then the third curry stop.
• Heavy rain or rising water: do not enter Todoroki Ravine. Start later with the Shiro-Hige pickup and use Curry Festival restaurants, Mikan, Reload and cafés as the indoor core.
• Animal-café decision: the scheduled visit is the cat café (Temari no Oshiro at Kichijōji Petit Mura, Oct 8). The Kyoto/Osaka exotic-animal side quests (otters, small animals, snakes) are optional, cut-first walk-ins added with the welfare tradeoffs acknowledged; no exotic-animal café is a scheduled anchor.

Weather Logic

• Severe rain on Oct 7: use a separate Tokyo indoor fallback. Do not swap with Oct 8 after the Ghibli ticket is booked.
• Light rain: Kamakura can still work with waterproof shoes, but skip caves/coastal sunset if unsafe.
• Heavy rain on Oct 9: skip Todoroki and Hanegi; keep the reserved sweets pickup and indoor Curry Festival route.

Why Fuji and Hakone Are Not Scheduled

The family already has:

• two long ticketed theme-park days;
• one full day trip and one Tokyo green/food day;
• a Tokyo-to-Kyoto transfer and a Kyoto-to-Osaka transfer;
• a possible Uji Nintendo Museum transfer;
• two fixed-time Kyoto performance/festival days.

A Fuji/Hakone day would cost a high-energy fandom day or the Kyoto performance structure. Keep it as a future Japan trip, not an anxious “maybe” squeezed into this one.
