05 — Ramen and Family Food Guide

Cities: Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka Family priority: ramen should be a memory, not just repeated bowls between shops.

The Food Strategy

  • One planned food experience per day is enough.
  • Share street-food portions so everyone can try more without wasting meals.
  • Keep a konbini breakfast fallback for ticketed early starts.
  • Counter restaurants may split the family; ask before queuing if sitting together matters.
  • A realistic ramen meal for four is roughly JPY 4,000–6,500 before extras.
  • Slurping is common and accepted, never required.

The Three Ramen Meals Worth Protecting

1. Ichiran or AFURI — Oct 6

Ichiran Shibuya is worth doing once for the private booth and customization ritual. The base ramen is JPY 1,180 before extras, seating is counter-only and the family may not sit together. Go off-peak.

AFURI is the better backup for a lighter yuzu-shio bowl and a more flexible end to the day.

2. Shinjuku dinner after Ghibli — Oct 8

Fuunji is famous for tsukemen but has only a small counter and no reservation. Treat it as optional after Ghibli, Nakano and the Shinjuku photo stops; never build the evening around an invented queue estimate.

If four nearby seats matter more, choose a larger family-friendly ramen shop on the live map.

3. Tokyo Ramen Street — Oct 16 backup

Use Tokyo Ramen Street only if Pokémon Café fails. Do not schedule both as full meals.

The lineup and prices change, so choose on the day from the official directory rather than hardcoding one shop months ahead. Official directory

Pokémon Café

  • Reservation required.
  • Seating period: 90 minutes.
  • Every guest age six or older must order at least one item.
  • There is no official reservation fee.
  • October 2026 release timing has not been announced; monitor official news and book immediately when published.
  • If Tokyo inventory fails, check the Osaka café only if its date fits the fixed Osaka route.

Never buy a reservation from a reseller.

Oct 9 Street-Food Game

The complete food route is:

  1. share tea and kuzu-mochi at Setsugekka in Todoroki Ravine if it is open;
  2. collect a reserved box of Totoro cream puffs from Shiro-Hige’s Daita shop;
  3. use Hanegi Park as a short picnic/reset, not another sightseeing checklist;
  4. at the Shimokitazawa Curry Festival, choose three mini portions: one mild/familiar, one adventurous and one child-selected wildcard;
  5. add ramen at dinner only if everyone is genuinely hungry after the curry crawl.

The 2026 festival runs Oct 8–25 around participating Shimokitazawa restaurants. Exact menus and opening hours are still shop-specific, so download the final official map close to travel. Official Curry Festival

Shiro-Hige’s Daita shop is open 10:30–18:00 and accepts pickup reservations. Official shop and reservations

Osaka Food Scorecard

On Oct 13 share, do not order four of everything:

  • takoyaki;
  • okonomiyaki;
  • kushikatsu;
  • one dessert;
  • one wildcard chosen by each child.

Kinryu’s dragon is a fun Dotonbori photo marker, not one of the trip’s serious ramen priorities.

Cute Food Without Overbooking

  • Harajuku crepe on Oct 6.
  • One character snack inside KAWAII MONSTER LAND.
  • Reserve Totoro cream puffs for the Oct 9 Setagaya picnic.
  • Sanrio or Mofusand only if it fits naturally; do not add another cross-city reservation.
  • During the protected 45–60-minute Tokyo Station First Avenue stop on Oct 16, choose at most one quick take-away target such as Kirby Café Petit or Mofusand. Character Street comes first; Okashi Land is a bonus, and Tokyo Ramen Street remains the meal backup if the Pokémon Café fails.
  • The scheduled live-animal experience is the Oct 8 cat café — Temari no Oshiro at Kichijōji Petit Mura. The Kyoto/Osaka animal side quests (otters, small animals, snakes) are optional cut-first walk-ins listed in the daily itinerary, added knowing the welfare tradeoffs. We considered a capybara café and skipped it: no current Tokyo operator had independent welfare verification strong enough to outweigh the systemic concerns around keeping a social, semi-aquatic wild species in a touch-and-feed café. Family Ordering Notes

  • Independent ramen counters may expect each seated diner to order a bowl.
  • Children’s portions are not universal.
  • Ask about spice and pork stock before ordering when relevant.
  • Carry a translation card for allergies; do not rely on staff guessing.
  • Keep cash for ticket-machine restaurants.
  • Avoid promising exact wait times—queues change by weather, events and social-media popularity.
