# 03 — Transport for the Complete Route

**Family:** 4 adult rail fares. The son is 12 during the trip.
**Principle:** use IC cards for city travel, reserved tickets for airport/intercity trains, and no nationwide JR Pass.

## Before Buying Anything

Save the exact addresses and offline last-mile directions for:

1. booked Tabata stay, Oct 2–11;
2. booked Fushimi Inari stay, Oct 11–13;
3. Osaka stay, Oct 13–15;
4. Tokyo stay, Oct 15–17.

The first Tokyo stay is confirmed in **Tabata**, not Ueno. Never reuse “walk back to Ueno” or Ueno-origin timing for Oct 2–11.

## Airport Transfers

### Arrival — Oct 2

Flight arrival is 19:40, so keep the route flexible:

- After immigration and bags, buy four adult **TOURIST PASMO** cards at the SKYLINER & KEISEI INFORMATION CENTER in the Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 station. Each costs JPY 2,000 with the full JPY 2,000 available as stored value, has no service charge/deposit and remains valid for 28 days. Keep each card’s reference paper with it. - Buy the next practical combined-fare **Skyliner** ticket to **Nippori** only after collecting the bags; do not reserve an arrival train that a flight delay could invalidate. All seats are reserved. - At Nippori, leave the Keisei gates with the Skyliner ticket, follow signs to JR, then tap PASMO into the JR Yamanote/Keihin-Tohoku service for the one-stop ride to Tabata. The revised JR IC fare is JPY 155. Expected family rail cost: **JPY 10,940**.
- Use a direct airport bus or taxi only when late baggage clearance, exhausted children or a difficult self-check-in make the extra cost worthwhile.

Do not pre-plan sightseeing. Send the host an arrival message after landing and follow the lockbox instructions saved in Airbnb.

### Departure — Oct 17

- Keep the day local.
- Collect luggage by 15:15.
- If the current Inaricho apartment lead is booked, take a short metered taxi to **Keisei-Ueno** if the luggage will not roll comfortably for 15–20 minutes. One ordinary taxi may not hold four people plus four large cases; use forwarded luggage, a larger vehicle or two taxis if needed. If a different final stay is chosen, recalculate this feeder leg before reserving the airport train.
- Reserve a Skyliner around 15:45–16:00 when sales open one month before travel, then recheck the exact Oct 17 timetable and terminal. The combined fare is JPY 2,580 each / **JPY 10,320 for four**.
- Target the correct Narita terminal by roughly 16:45–17:15 for the 20:40 flight.

Check terminal and train status on the day.

## IC Cards

- Use **one physical TOURIST PASMO per traveler**. All four travelers pay adult rail fares; a card cannot be shared through a gate.
- Use PASMO for ordinary JR, Tokyo Metro, Toei, Keio, Tokyu, Odakyu, Enoden, Yurikamome and local-bus rides. The same cards continue to work in Kyoto/Uji and Osaka.
- Start with the included JPY 2,000. Add roughly JPY 5,000 per card on Oct 3, then reload JPY 1,000–2,000 at a time before Kamakura and Kansai. Physical IC-card reloads are most reliably done with cash at station machines or convenience-store counters.
- Always tap **in and out**. When changing operators—JR to Keio at Shinjuku, JR to Yurikamome at Shimbashi, JR to Tokyu at Oimachi—exit one company’s gates and enter the next company’s gates.
- Do not tap PASMO when using a separate paper/QR day pass. Use only the pass at that operator’s gates.
- A bank card’s contactless transit feature is not the family default: coverage is still less universal than PASMO and does not remove the need for separate reserved/limited-express tickets.
- Keep cash for IC reloads and small ticket machines. Pay Skyliner and Shinkansen reservations separately by credit card.

Times below are sensible **leave-the-apartment windows**, not train reservations. Check the live route after breakfast and add the private walk from the Airbnb to its station. Costs are current planning totals per adult and for the family of four; a different gate, an extra stop or exiting during a transfer can change a total slightly.

### Planned final Ueno/Inaricho lead — Oct 15–17

The apartment described here is the current accommodation lead, **not a confirmed booking**. These routes become operational only if that stay is booked; otherwise preserve the same day structure and recalculate the short base-to-station legs.

- **Oct 15 arrival if this lead is booked:** if the family has large luggage, a taxi from Tokyo Station to the apartment is the lowest-friction choice; expect roughly JPY 2,500–3,500 total depending on traffic and the exact address. If traveling light, use JR Tokyo → Ueno and walk about nine minutes, or Metro Marunouchi Tokyo → Ginza and change to the Ginza Line for Inaricho. SmartEX fares do not automatically include the same conventional-line benefits as every paper long-distance ticket, so follow the actual ticket’s gate instructions rather than assuming the Ueno leg is free.
- **Oct 16 outbound:** walk about two minutes to Inaricho and take the **Ginza Line direct to Nihombashi**—roughly 10–12 minutes, JPY 178 IC each. Walk to Tokyo Station First Avenue on the Yaesu side.
- **Oct 16 First Avenue → Taiko-kan:** the cheap route is to walk back to Nihombashi Station and take the Ginza Line direct to **Tawaramachi**, JPY 178 IC each, then walk about five minutes. If the café/Character Street timing leaves less than 45 minutes before Taiko-kan’s 15:00 last admission, take a metered taxi from Tokyo Station instead; allow roughly JPY 1,800–2,500 total depending on traffic.
- **Oct 16 return:** Taiko-kan → Senso-ji is a straightforward walk. From Senso-ji, walk roughly 20–25 minutes to the Inaricho apartment, or return to Tawaramachi and pay JPY 178 each for the one-stop Ginza Line ride to Inaricho. - **Oct 17 airport:** taxi or walk to Keisei-Ueno, then the reserved Skyliner described above.

### Tokyo transport envelope

Using the baseline routes above, allow approximately **JPY 15,300–15,500 per person / JPY 61,200–62,000 for four** for both Skyliner trips, Tokyo city rides, Yurikamome, Yomiuriland gondola and the Kamakura/Enoden day. This excludes taxis, Shinkansen, Kyoto/Osaka local transport and attraction admission. The DisneySea fallback is cheaper to reach than PokéPark: allow roughly JPY 700 per person round trip from Tabata by JR, versus about JPY 1,546 for the PokéPark rail-and-gondola route.

## High-Friction Days

### PokéPark

- Leave the Tokyo base around 09:00.
- Transfer at Shinjuku to the Keio route for Keio-Yomiuriland.
- The Sky Shuttle gondola is part of the fun when operating.
- Reach the area before 10:30 for 11:00 PokéPark hours and app requests from 10:45.

### Kamakura / Enoshima

Use a one-direction route and return through Fujisawa. This avoids repeating the entire coastal railway and makes the day feel like an adventure rather than a commute.

### Ghibli → Nakano → Shinjuku

- Museum access is by bus or walk from Mitaka.
- After Kichijoji lunch, use JR Chuo to Nakano for a 60–90 minute collector stop.
- Continue one stop cluster east to Shinjuku for the 3D cat, Godzilla photo and dinner.
- namco TOKYO is the first transport-saving cut if the day runs late.

### Mundo Pixar inside the waterfront route — Oct 4

- CREVIA BASE Tokyo is by Shijō-mae, between teamLab’s Shin-Toyosu area and Odaiba on the Yurikamome.
- Treat Pixar as a fixed stop: buy a timed entry around 11:45/12:00, allow about one hour and continue east; there is no reason to return to central Tokyo.
- Protect teamLab, Pixar and a meaningful Joypolis block. Cut extended Gundam Base/mall browsing and the waterfront sunset first rather than allowing the three-anchor day to run late.

### Todoroki → Setagaya-Daita → Shimokitazawa — Oct 9

- Reach Todoroki through Oimachi for the morning ravine walk.
- After the ravine, use the live route back through Jiyūgaoka and Shibuya to Shimokitazawa; allow about 45 minutes including transfers and the walk to Shiro-Hige.
- Shiro-Hige, Hanegi Park and central Shimokitazawa are close enough to connect on foot, but use a short taxi if the park construction or family energy makes the walk unpleasant.
- Return from Shimokitazawa through Shinjuku; the whole day remains inside Tokyo.

### Kyoto arrival + Awata — Oct 11

- Reserve an early Tokyo → Kyoto Nozomi that leaves enough margin to store the two-night bags at Kyoto Station before the 13:00 Mizuekai.
- The Fushimi apartment cannot be entered until 15:00 and no early bag drop is promised. Forward the main suitcases to Osaka if accepted there; otherwise use staffed storage or correctly sized lockers at Kyoto Station.
- The recital and Awata area are east of Kyoto Station. After leaving the procession around 19:30, collect the bags and continue to Fushimi Inari for check-in.
- Reach the Awata procession before its official 17:00 start and leave around 19:30.
- Expect crowd controls and slower transit; save the apartment address and return route offline.

### UZUMASA + Kyoto Avanti — Oct 12

- Use the fastest live combination from Fushimi Inari to UZUMASA Kyoto Village; expect a cross-city journey with at least one transfer.
- Leave UZUMASA by about 15:00–15:30 for a real apartment rest.
- Kyoto Avanti is by Kyoto Station. Be at the theatre before doors at 18:15 for the 19:00 HIBIKI show.
- The optional Mibu Kyogen route is a swap that requires leaving UZUMASA around 13:15; it is not an extra stop on the baseline.

### Tokyo Dome → optional Pokémon projection — Oct 10

- Kasuga Station by Tokyo Dome City and Tochomae Station are on the Toei Oedo Line; this is the lowest-friction way to add Tokyo Night & Light.
- Use the earliest practical Pokémon slot only if it appears in the official Oct 10 rotation, then eat in West Shinjuku.
- Do not use Instagram’s 19:30/20:30/21:00 list as the October work order. The official site publishes multiple general screening slots, while individual works rotate.
- Skip the projection if the listing changes, weather cancels the outdoor show or it would force a late night before the early Kyoto train.

### Fushimi Inari departure morning — Oct 13

- Leave the bags locked in the apartment and carry only daypacks.
- Spend 60–90 minutes around the lower torii route and turn back before the mountain climb becomes the day’s headline.
- Yūzen Fushimi is one minute from JR Inari and lists a 09:30 opening. Visit only after the early shrine loop; allow 20–30 minutes for choosing/engraving and confirm Tuesday hours in the final week.
- Return for breakfast and bags, complete the host’s checkout steps by 11:00, then continue to Namba. Fushimi replaces the Manga Museum; it is not added before it.

### Taiko-kan deadline — Oct 16

- If the current final-Tokyo lead is booked, Tokyo Station First Avenue is easy from the Ueno/Inaricho apartment. Walk about two minutes to Inaricho, take the Ginza Line directly to Nihombashi in roughly 10–12 minutes, and use exit B2 for the Pokémon Café building. First Avenue is a short onward walk at Tokyo Station’s Yaesu side and is outside the JR ticket gates. The JR alternative is a roughly nine-minute walk to Ueno Station followed by a direct train to Tokyo Station.
- Protect 45–60 minutes for [First Avenue](https://www.tokyoeki-1bangai.co.jp/en/): Character Street first, then Okashi Land only if time remains. Tokyo Ramen Street remains the meal backup if the café fails.
- Preferred order with a 10:30–11:00 café booking: Pokémon Café → First Avenue → Taiko-kan. With a later café booking, reverse the anchors: Taiko-kan at 11:00 → Pokémon Café → First Avenue → Senso-ji.
- Reach Taiko-kan around 14:00 and no later than its official **15:00 last admission**.
- The Nishi-Asakusa store is in the same building; choose the bachi after the museum.
- Continue to Senso-ji toward dusk. Cut Skytree, extra Nakamise time and First Avenue browsing beyond one hour before dropping the First Avenue stop itself.

## Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka / Uji

### Oct 11

- Reserve a Nozomi from Tokyo to Kyoto.
- Book oversized-luggage space only if a bag exceeds the railway threshold.
- Buy an ekiben before boarding.
- Travel with two-night packs if the main bags have been forwarded directly to Osaka.

### Oct 13

- Leave luggage in the apartment during the early Fushimi Inari visit, then return and check out by 11:00.
- Use the quickest live route from Fushimi Inari through Kyoto/Shin-Osaka to Namba and drop luggage before Den Den Town.
- Protect the short Fushimi visit. If the morning slips, shorten duplicate Den Den Town/Pokémon shopping after arrival in Osaka rather than moving Fushimi to another day.

### Oct 15 if Nintendo Museum succeeds

- Check out and move to Uji for the assigned entry slot.
- Bring passports.
- Use coin lockers or luggage forwarding/storage planned in advance; do not arrive at the museum assuming large bags are welcome.
- Continue Uji → Kyoto, then reserved Nozomi to Tokyo.

### Oct 15 if the lottery fails

Take the recovery morning and a direct reserved Shin-Osaka → Tokyo train after lunch.

## Luggage Plan

- Do not forward to an unstaffed apartment without written acceptance and delivery instructions.
- Consider forwarding the main suitcases from Tokyo directly to the Osaka hotel at checkout on Oct 11; travel to Kyoto with two-night packs.
- Confirm Osaka can receive the delivery before sending anything.
- If forwarding is not possible, use luggage space on the Tokyo → Kyoto train and Kyoto Station storage until the 15:00 apartment check-in.
- For Oct 15, forward large bags from Osaka to the final Tokyo stay only if both properties can receive/send them and delivery timing is confirmed.
- Otherwise use station lockers/storage sized and located in advance.
- Travel with medicines, passports, chargers and one overnight change in daypacks.

## Pass Decisions

- **Nationwide JR Pass:** no; the route does not justify it. The official web price is currently JPY 50,000 per adult for seven days; overseas-agency purchase rises to JPY 53,000 from Oct 1, 2026. This family has four adult rail fares, so the pass alone is **JPY 200,000–212,000**.
- The planned long-distance rail is essentially Tokyo → Kyoto and Kansai/Uji → Tokyo plus short local hops. The existing budget envelope for all reserved Shinkansen legs is only JPY 110,000–125,000 for the family. A JR Pass would therefore cost roughly **JPY 75,000–102,000 more**, before any JPY 4,960-per-person-per-ride Nozomi supplements.
- The Instagram USD comparison is not a quote for this itinerary. Compare exact yen fares in the chosen official booking flow before purchase; do not buy a pass “for convenience” without doing the route math.
- **Tokyo subway pass:** buy only if the actual next 24/48/72 hours are subway-heavy. Several key days use JR/private rail.
- **Enoshima/Kamakura pass:** compare against the final starting station; convenience can matter more than a small saving.
- **Joypolis/Tokyo Dome:** these are attraction passes, not transport; price them against the actual rides wanted.

## Rush-Hour Strategy

The Instagram “golden hours” are useful as a rough Tokyo warning, not a universal Japan timetable.

- Tokyo’s approximate commuter peaks are **07:30–09:30** and **17:30–19:30**, with the morning usually tighter. Avoid moving luggage then when the itinerary allows. [Official Tokyo travel guide](https://www.gotokyo.org/en/plan/getting-around/subways/index.html)
- Do not delay a timed attraction merely to obey a generic crowd chart. On early-entry days, travel earlier, use live congestion/route information and wait for the next train if a carriage is visibly packed.
- Oct 11 and Oct 15 are reserved Shinkansen transfers, not ordinary commuter improvisation. Reserve family seats and required oversized-baggage space; station crowding matters more than a social-media color block.
- The Oct 13 checkout transfer should begin after 10:30/11:00, naturally outside the morning peak. Keep luggage compact and avoid optional stops after checkout.
- Evening city returns can overlap the second peak. Eat locally or wait over a snack instead of forcing four people with bags into the first arriving train.
