# 08 — Practical Family Playbook

## October Conditions

Expect mild-to-warm days, cooler evenings and possible rain or typhoon disruption. Pack layers rather than one heavy coat.

JMA October climate normals are about **22.0/14.8°C in Tokyo, 23.4/14.4°C in Kyoto and 23.7/16.0°C in Osaka** (typical daily high/low). Tokyo’s October monthly rainfall normal is 234.8 mm, Kyoto’s is 143.2 mm and Osaka’s is 136.0 mm, so a waterproof layer is essential even though many days may be comfortable. These are climate normals, not a trip forecast; use the actual JMA forecast during the final week. - **buy walking shoes for all four travelers by July 31, then break them in on progressively longer walks;**
- one light rain jacket and compact umbrella per person;
- small daypacks;
- refillable bottles;
- power banks;
- clean socks for the cat café;
- medicines in carry-on with prescription copies;
- one change of clothes in carry-on for the long flight.

Check the Japan Meteorological Agency forecast and any storm notices during the final week.

Tokyo Yosakoi and Ikegami Oeshiki have been removed from the route. Do not reinsert them from older drafts.

## Phones and Apps

Install/update before travel:

- Google Maps plus offline Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka areas;
- Google Translate with Japanese offline;
- official PokéPark app;
- official USJ app;
- SmartEX or chosen Shinkansen booking method;

- airline app;
- one shared family notes/list app.

Keep screenshots/PDFs for every timed ticket. Each adult should have the full family set offline.

### Three phrases worth memorizing

`Onegaishimasu` is not a magic ending for every sentence. Point to the item or show the translated sentence, say the phrase calmly, and thank the person afterward. Also save `wakarimasen` (“I don’t understand”), `… wa doko desu ka?` (“Where is …?”) and `ikura desu ka?` (“How much is it?”). ### Translation workflow

- Download Japanese inside Google Translate on every family phone and test it in airplane mode.
- Use the camera for menus/signs, but confirm important allergy, medical, ticket and station information with a person; machine translation can miss context.
- Save accommodation addresses, key dietary sentences and the four chopstick-name spellings as starred phrases.
- For a longer exchange, use conversation mode and let the other person read the Japanese screen rather than repeatedly speaking louder.

### Connectivity without influencer risk

- Choose eSIM, physical SIM or roaming by coverage, data allowance, hotspot rules and total price—not an Instagram referral code.
- Confirm each phone is carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible before paying.
- Install on stable home Wi-Fi according to the provider’s activation policy; save QR/APN/setup instructions offline before departure.
- Keep two independent adult phones. Ideally use different fallback paths so one activation or provider problem does not strand the family.
- Disable data roaming on the home SIM; follow the travel eSIM provider’s exact roaming setting. Make one real test call/message and route search after landing.
- The code `MATAN5087` from the post was not independently verified and is not part of this plan.

### IC-card boundary

Buy one physical **TOURIST PASMO** for each traveler after collecting bags at Narita, as detailed in the [transport guide](./03-TRANSPORT.md). Use it for ordinary urban rail, buses and many shops in Tokyo, Kamakura, Kyoto/Uji and Osaka; reload in small cash amounts because unused stored value is not refundable. It does **not** replace reserved Skyliner or Shinkansen tickets. If SmartEX is linked to an IC card, that card is only the gate token while the Shinkansen purchase remains separate. Do not assume IC cards cover every rural/highway service or cross all regional boundaries. ## Family Ticket Folder

Use one cloud folder plus offline copies:

File names should start with the date and include the lead guest name.

### Booked-flight record

The Ethiopian flights are purchased, but the itinerary screenshot did not show every operating detail. Copy the following from the full e-ticket into the private `01 Flights` folder:

- booking reference / PNR and all four e-ticket numbers;
- operating terminal for every airport;
- checked- and cabin-baggage allowance for the purchased fare;
- seat assignments and meal requests;
- actual family total for the budget ledger;
- airline contact and disruption-policy details.

Reconfirm the schedule 72 hours before both departures and save the final boarding documents offline on both adult phones.

## Confirmed Lodging Setup

- **Tokyo / Oct 2–11:** send passport images for all four guests through Airbnb chat. The host will not release check-in details until this is complete. Send the approximate 22:00–23:00 arrival time and obtain written confirmation that late self-check-in is permitted.
- **Kyoto / Oct 11–13:** complete the host-supplied registration form and confirm completion in Airbnb chat. Save the access guide on both adults’ phones.
- Keep exact addresses, confirmation numbers, door codes and Wi-Fi passwords in the private lodging folder, not in the public/shared itinerary.
- The Kyoto room door does not auto-lock. Lock it manually on entry and every departure.
- On Kyoto checkout, bag rubbish inside the room, switch off lights/air-conditioning, lock the door and message the host.

## Daily Rhythm

- Review only the next day each evening.
- Identify the headline, booking time and “cut first” item.
- Give each child a fixed arcade/gachapon envelope.
- Stop shopping when the wish-list target or time cap is reached.
- After a festival or park block, protect the next rest window.
- Carry a konbini snack so a hungry queue does not derail the whole day.

## Train Crowd Reality

The Instagram crowd chart is a useful warning, not a timetable guarantee.

- Tokyo’s approximate commuter peaks are **07:30–09:30** and **17:30–19:30**; the weekday morning is usually the tighter squeeze. [Official Tokyo guide](https://www.gotokyo.org/en/plan/getting-around/subways/index.html)
- “10:00–16:00 is empty” and “after 20:00 is always quiet” are false promises around attractions, events and nightlife areas.
- Weekend/public-holiday crowd patterns differ from weekday commuting. Oct 10–12 can still be busy around attractions even without a normal office rush.
- Keep timed entries and reserved Shinkansen seats. Travel earlier when practical, use live crowd/route information, and let one packed urban train leave rather than forcing four people into it.
- The Oct 9 morning departure toward Todoroki crosses the weekday peak. Prefer about 07:00 or after 09:30; if the itinerary retains 08:00, treat a crowded ride as an intentional tradeoff.

## Cat-Café Rules

The only scheduled live-animal café is **Cat Cafe Temari no Oshiro** inside **Kichijōji Petit Mura** (Oct 8) — a fairy-tale cat castle with about 20 cats and no time limit.

- Reserve ahead; weekends sell out.
- Children are admitted from age 10, so both kids qualify.
- Wear clean socks.
- Do not wake, hold or chase cats.
- Leave if the room is too crowded or the cats show stress.

Three exotic-animal **side quests** are deliberate, eyes-open exceptions to the original no-exotics rule: the LOUTRE otter café in Kyoto (Oct 11), and Small Animal Cafe Rock Star plus the America-mura snake café in Osaka (Oct 13). A peer-reviewed study of Japanese exotic-animal cafés found consistently low welfare, so these follow strict side-quest rules: walk-in only when there is genuine spare time; they are always the first thing cut; wash hands before and after; no flash photography; leave immediately if any animal looks stressed. ## Arcade and Shopping Rules

- Photograph expensive items and compare later districts.
- Use cash envelopes for crane games and gachapon.
- Decide in advance whether a crane prize is worth more than buying the item.
- Keep receipts.
- Carry fragile figures in hand luggage.
- Do not schedule tax-free paperwork near a timed attraction.

## PokéPark Ticket-Sourcing Rule

- As of Jul 24, the overseas store shows maintenance/changeover information and no Oct 5 purchase path. Monitor it for official inventory re-release.
- The announced **Aug 1** update applies to admissions from Nov 1; it is not a promised reopening for October.
- Use only the official international store or a seller PokéPark explicitly identifies as authorized.
- Do not pay a Fiverr buyer, broker or unofficial reseller to purchase or transfer tickets. Commercial acquisition/resale/transfer can lead to invalidation, and entry may be refused without compensation.
- DisneySea is the Oct 5 fallback if official PokéPark tickets cannot be secured; it is not an additional park day.

## Food and Allergy Notes

- Carry a Japanese allergy card for each relevant allergy.
- Independent ramen counters may seat the family separately and may require a bowl per diner.
- Slurping is accepted, never required.
- Share street-food portions.
- Never rely on a hardcoded queue estimate.
- Pokémon Café has no legitimate reservation fee; do not buy reseller access.

## Festival Safety

- Photograph the meeting point before entering a crowd.
- Put the accommodation name/phone number in both children’s phones.
- Choose a fixed regrouping point if separated.
- Keep valuables zipped and phones tethered/secure.
- Stand outside the densest procession flow.
- Leave early enough that tired children are not navigating the final crowd surge.

## Luggage

- Confirm that apartments can receive deliveries before using takkyubin.
- Do not send bags to an unstaffed property based on assumption.
- Keep passports, medicines, chargers and one overnight change with the family.
- Preferred plan: forward main suitcases from the first Tokyo stay directly to Osaka and use two-night packs in Kyoto.
- The Fushimi Inari apartment has not promised luggage storage. Use Kyoto Station storage before the 15:00 check-in on Oct 11; leave bags in the room during the early shrine visit and return before the 11:00 checkout on Oct 13.
- The Oct 15 Nintendo Museum plan needs a specific luggage solution before travel.

## Basic Etiquette

- Keep voices low on trains.
- Queue in the marked lines.
- Do not eat while moving through crowded streets unless the area clearly supports it.
- Carry rubbish until a bin appears.
- Remove shoes when indicated.
- Ask before photographing people or small shops.
- At Kamakurakōkōmae, stay out of the road and respect residents.

## Health and Emergency

- Travel insurance details should be saved offline.
- Japan emergency numbers: police **110**, ambulance/fire **119**.
- Keep passport copies separate from originals.
- Know the nearest late-opening pharmacy and hospital to each stay.
- Schedule water and seated breaks before anyone feels unwell.

The best practical rule for this trip: protect the headline experience and delete the filler before the family becomes tired.
